The last year I spent in the classroom, I taught first grade - a year that tested and strengthened me. I taught first grade in my previous district, however I was exposed to new challenges in the last district I taught in that ultimately opened my eyes to different realities that communities face and how that shows up in the classroom.

Last year, I received a LinkedIn connection request from a teacher in the district where I had last taught. She was looking for a way out of the classroom and reached out for guidance. It struck me how simple yet powerful that moment was. Sometimes, all it takes is sending a message to someone who has already made it to the other side.

In recent years during the holiday season I have become increasingly introspective and reflective within my personal and professional life. The resounding word during this time as well is always rest.

As I have begun navigating and observing the corporate space for almost three years now, the most noticeable consistent issue is leadership. More specifically, those in leadership positions with the inability to effectively lead. I have witnessed many times in work settings, that those in leadership are more willing to “flex” their leadership title rather than “proactively” being a leader through consistent and genuine thoughts, words, and actions.

My sincerest thoughts are with those who have lost friends, family, and loved ones to COVID-19. I can't imagine the whirlwind that this virus has caused on people all around the world and the lasting impact it continues to have. With the rising cases of COVID-19 and yet another variant arising almost 5 years after the beginning of this pandemic, I can't help but think back on the fact that I taught during a global health crisis. In January 2019, I had just begun my first full time teaching position halfway through the school year. I was excited for the following school year to have my very own first beginning of the year (full year) experience with my own class. I had no idea that would involve what was to come with the pandemic in March 2020.

As a former classroom educator, I have happily (and shockingly) stepped into the unassigned role of supporting teachers wanting to leave the classroom. I say shockingly because it was two years ago (2022) that I was seeking support in the unknown. The unknown of giving a career my very best and wondering what transferable skills could I align with a brand new career venture, the unknown of securing a job before the end of the school year, and the list goes on.
